National Race #1...Redlands, California

So the fear has started to set in. Really.

We are exactly 1 wk away from my first national race and I am scared. Really scared since I don't know what to expect or I don't know if how I've trained will be good enough. I mean...I know that I'm not going to win. I've heard about some of the other participants who are riding. They are already Paralympians so I'm not going to win. I just don't want to lose as in COME IN LAST PLACE!?! It's that competitive drive within me. I DON'T WANT TO COME IN LAST PLACE!!!

I am so excited though! Even more so since my kids get to come down with me too! In fact, there will be A FIRST thing happening during this trip. We will be taking the FIRST true, real live "fake family vacation" while we're in California.

I talked Trevor into driving down with me so that we could take the kids to the beach. Then, like everything that I plan, I have to make sure that we do all that we possibly can so we are going to go to Disneyland for the day! I could not wait to tell the kids! It's going to be a blast!

Then I also get to have my own personal fan club for my races! hehehe

Ooops! Here it comes again. The butterfly's are back! Here's the itinerary. The highlighted events are the races that I will be doing. They're are supposed to be pretty tough but who knows. I could be shocked or I could get my ace handed to me on a plate. I'll just have to wait and see and change my thinking. I just, no matter what, need to beat my personal per minute time. I'll think small and then the better I do, the more excited I'll be!

"Pioneer" Pride...

The last time that I was in the Main gym of Lehi High School was on the night of my graduation day. The only thing that was on my mind was showing up, making an appearance, getting out to Cedar Fort, and finding Weston. Honestly...I know.
For weeks I'd been hearing about this Alumni Tournament that they were doing, both from my brother and from my friends. I would just laugh and shake my head, swearing that I could care less. For years, I'd told myself that I was "so over Lehi, all of that, and especially all of the things that the High school represented". Not so much. The closer the tournament came, the closer I knew that I'd give in especially since I knew how much it meant to my brother to show support.

Let me give you some history on what this sport means to the men of LHS. One word...PRIDE.

It has always been a big deal to this once was "small town" to be the State Champs but I didn't know how much until 1993. That was the year when 5 guys-best friends-pals who had nick named themselves "The Fab 5" won the 3A State game. We were all friends so it was HUGE! Tara's husband was actually the 3A MVP. This had been something that had been groomed since these guys were 5. I'm not kidding!

1994 went. 1995 sucked :)

Then came my brothers team. 1996 they won...1997 they won...1998 they won! Yep. They called their team, and still do, "The 3-petes". Again, this was HUGE!

There have been good teams since but for me? The prideful rivalry between the class of 1993 and the class of 1998 was intense. Of course I was going for my brother but still. I jokingly told "The Fab 5" that I wanted them to finally go down but in my heart I was not kidding. :)

Lets not forget that all of these guys are married to one of my friends! Yeah.

I will admit though that it was fun to hear my own old nick name again! It was never Katie or Kate when talking to these guys. It was always "Terry".
O k. I will admit. I got hooked. Every night of that week I had to be to at least 2 games. I loved it! I love watching basketball games and especially games of those who are not pro. They still have the drive...the love...the heart even when they are old, fat, and slow! (not saying that these guys were!?!)
Anyway...unfortunately my bro's team lost so they did not get to the championship game but it did get to 1997 vs 1993. Emily's husband, my friend from high school who has the twin daughters, played on the 1997 team so it was all good that 1993 FINALLY WENT DOWN to them! hehehe JK?!?

Birthdays Are The BEST Excuse...

...to get together for another "Girls Night Out! Since shopping is one of Tara's favorite past times, we knew that the night had to have something to do with it. We had time before dinner so we journeyed up to "Big Rock". I also "realized" that I "needed" a jacket too! hehehe Dinner plans got a little messy when "The Cheesecake Factory" tried to tell us that it was going to be a 3.5 hr wait!?! Are you kidding me??? The food IS NOT that good. Come on! So I made an executive decision and took us all to "The India House". It was SO GOOD! If anyone is interested in going somewhere different, it's on about 8800 South and State up in Sandy. Like I said...it was SO GOOD! We all ordered something different so that we could share which made it even more fun.
...before

...after
Since the theme was shopping and because we were going to see the movie "Confessions Of A Shopaholic", we knew exactly what had to be on Tara's birthday cake. It turned out so perfect!

I was also extremely proud to be wearing my LATEST and BEST purchase...my '80's tight acid wash purple jeans! I LOVE THEM and had to show them off!!!

L to R...Nan, Teneale, Angi, Hiloree, Katie, Brigette, Sara, & Tara

Happy Birthday Tara! We hope that you had as much as we did! I can hardly wait to start helping with the next birthday celebration! :) Especially if it might be mine...May 30th?!? hehehe

How I've Spent Some Of My Days...

I will say that it has been a fun month being able to get together alot with my girl-friends! I think that the warm weather wants us getting out, out, out as much as we possibly can. It's not as big of a pain when it's sunny like when the world is covered with snow!
This was a funny moment that we had to get a picture of. I was on my way home from running some errands and I was just in the mood for something yummy but nothing sounded good so I just went home. As I was pulling into my driveway I got a text from my friend Misty.

"I'm in the mood for a treat. Let's meet real quick!"

That's all I needed to hear so I pulled my car back out, called her, and made a plan to meet her at Chili's for one of their "Molten Chocolate Cakes". We devoured it in less than 5 minutes because it was so de-le-c-0-s0! If there is one thing that Misty knows about Katie...it's that I will always be up for anything that has to do with dessert! Really.
Remember my friends from here ? Well, Chantel just had her baby so we wanted to get together to see her as well as to have a little play date so that's what we did and it was way fun! We always have fun catching up and laughing at ourselves!
Emily's twin daughters, Avery and Kendal, were so amused with my chair. It's like a magnet wherever I go. I'm serious...and it was darling!
Note to self...kids...others. Seeing my friends always makes me a happier person which then creates a happier home so continue as much as possible! :)
WILL do!

This Months Family Outings...

I swear I am constantly running out of fun activities for our family to do every week. Carter had been begging for us to go to "The Harley Davidson Shop" so we finally made a plan to do it. Sadly...once we got down there, they close up at 6 pm. Isn't that a bit odd but whatever. We took a walk around the building like we were window shopping, saw some of the motor-cycles, enough to call it good, take this picture to prove that we'd actually been there, and off we went :) I noticed that the kids movie "Bolt" was playing at "The Sticky Shoe Showhouse" movie theatre in American Fork so we decided to brave the disgustingness. But honestly...it was so clean, not sticky, not gross, and turned out really fun! They pigged out on popcorn, licorice, and sour straws even though it would be my sugar high nightmare when it was bedtime!
...this is Kindra's attempt at hiding her eyes from the piercing camera flash of light...

Probably the best activity that we were able to do, was to get the chance to go up and show the kids the Draper temple. We tried hard to explain some of the things that go on in the temple and in a way that would be easy for them to understand (and let me tell you how hard that was!!!) Carter was so excited to see the baptismal font because he is getting ready for his baptism. Even though we had to explain that his font would not look as "awesome" as that :)

Anyway...just a few of the fun family activities that we have been able to do while we are waiting for the snow to melt and the summer activities to begin!

And believe me...I've got the days on the calendar crossed off! :)

My Deja Vu Of Walking...

Yes this is me standing underneath my quote that has been written on the wall of the place that I used to/do go to therapy, "Neuroworx". When I first met Jan Black, she was just a therapist for another doctor so I consider myself an old schooler because I've been with Jan before "Neuroworx" was even in existence.
I use to live in a world of "therapy land" and finally got to a point where I realized that I needed to quit being selfish and LIVE again. I went back to work, bought a home, was a single parent, and stopped physically taking the best care of myself. Even though I missed therapy it just didn't fit in the cards. I knew that I could do it at home but you never do it at home. You always come up with other things that you should really be doing instead. So I stopped.....
...Now that I've got the time, I decided to start going back and I love it. It's hard to really explain but I'm just right back where I should be. We have fun! They make me laugh and I'm humbled every day. I see people who can't do anything because of how bad their injury is. They can't use their arms. They can't get around. They can't move from one spot to another without help. I'm humbled and at times have also felt really guilty and selfish. How can I complain when my life is a million times easier then theirs. Like I said, I'm humbled every day that I'm there and I need that. It brings me back to reality...
OK...so this is a warning. What you are about to see is not sexy. It's not cute. It looks awkward. But it's so great! Hard as hell but so awesome and more than words can explain! When I first learned how to do this 5 yrs ago, it was scary. I would have to talk myself into it and my famous line, my quote became "It's all mental" which is why they put it up on their wall. A classic Katie saying...

Anyway...just wanted to show you what else I've been working on. I had to brag a little and show that I can still walk with my leg braces. I'm proud of myself that I can do it! I'll get better like I was before but I'd say that it's not too bad for try #1 and #2 for missing out on doing it for 4 yrs, huh? :)
